Abstract
This study assessed the activities of the Police – Community Relations Committee and their effectiveness in addressing criminality in Okene Local Government Area, Kogi State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 351 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane formula comprising PCRC members, police officers, community leaders, and residents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Smart PLS version 2 Software). Findings revealed that the major activities of PCRC in Okene LGA include intelligence gathering, public enlightenment campaigns, mediation in communal disputes, and support for police logistics. The study further revealed that PCRC activities have significantly contributed to early crime detection, improved police response time, and increased public trust in the police. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor logistics, lack of training, and low community participation were identified as factors limiting the effectiveness of the committee. The study concluded that PCRC plays a vital role in crime prevention in Okene LGA. It recommended increased government funding, regular training for PCRC members, and sustained public awareness to strengthen police-community collaboration for safer communities.
