Classroom Sensory Accommodations: Integrating Tools into Instructional Design

Esther Ajayi, Eleanor Elizabeth Ubakum Opurum

Abstract

Sensory processing differences are now recognised as a defining feature of the experience of a substantial proportion of learners with autism spectrum disorder and are independently documented in learners with a range of developmental, behavioural, and mental-health conditions. Classrooms that were designed around the assumption of typical sensory regulation impose, on these learners, an environmental load that substantially interferes with their capacity to attend, engage, and learn. Sensory regulation strategies have entered routine classroom practice in response to this recognition, and three categories of tools have emerged as particularly prevalent: weighted items (blankets, vests, lap pads), quiet spaces (sensory rooms, break corners, regulatory retreats), and fidget aids (tactile objects, stress balls, resistance bands). Each category is supported by practitioner-oriented guidance, by a developing empirical literature, and by competing theoretical accounts. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that integrates the three categories into a coherent classroom-level approach to sensory regulation, grounded in the theoretical vocabulary of sensory integration and the Model of Human Occupation, and informed by the implementation realities of contemporary inclusive and specialist classrooms. The framework specifies the regulatory logic of each tool category, the conditions under which use is likely to support rather than interfere with learning, the instructional decisions through which tool use is embedded in the classroom day, and the ethical considerations that bear on tool provision. The paper is explicitly conceptual; no primary data are presented, and the claims advanced are offered as a structured hypothesis for practitioner and research consideration.
