Exploring the Intersection of Love, Loss and Reincarnation in Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s When We Were Fireflies

Zainab Abdulkarim PhD, Sadam Yusuf

Abstract

This paper takes a dive into Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s When We Were Fireflies (2023), exploring the intricate themes of love, loss, reincarnation, memory, and time, and how they shape the narrative and the characters' journeys. It looks at the many facets of love romantic and spiritual, while also emphasizing that loss is a natural part of life that drives growth and transformation. The concepts of rebirth and reincarnation are depicted as ongoing cycles that link past lives to the present, offering paths to healing and renewal. The imagery of fireflies, along with other recurring symbols like trains and dreams, beautifully captures the delicate, cyclical, and radiant nature of human life. Through a thorough analysis of characters and themes, this study reveals that the novel is not just about personal struggles; it is a profound reflection on the cyclical nature of existence, where memory and time serve as both burdens and gateways to renewal. In the end, the paper highlights that Ibrahim’s novel blends realism with metaphysical insights, affirming that while human life is fragile, it thrives on love, continuity, and spiritual rebirth.
