Emotional Self-Disclosure and Posttraumatic Growth Among Victims of Farmers-Herders Conflict in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State: The Mediating Role of Rumination

Abstract

The trauma associated with herders-farmers conflict in Benue state has effect on the emotional, and psychological response of victims. However, the roles of self-disclosure and rumination have been incongruent over the years. Thus, this study investigated emotional self-disclosure and posttraumatic growth among victims of farmers-herders’ conflict in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State: the mediating role of rumination. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted using a sample of 384 participants whose ages ranged from 18 - 67 years with a mean age of 38.500 years (SD=14.539). Using accidental sampling technique, data collection was done using Distress Disclosure Index, The Ruminative Response Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Four hypotheses were formulated and tested using simple linear, Hayes process mediation analysis and standard multiple regression analysis. The result revealed that emotional self-disclosure significantly influenced posttraumatic growth among victims of farmers-herders’ conflict in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. Also, the result indicated that rumination significantly influenced posttraumatic growth among victims. Results also showed that rumination significantly mediated between emotional self- disclosure and posttraumatic growth among victims. Lastly, the results indicated that emotional self-disclosure and rumination jointly influenced posttraumatic growth among victims of farmers herders’ conflict. They recommended among others that mental health professionals and community organizations should create safe spaces where victims feel comfortable sharing their traumatic experiences. In addition, programmes such as expressive writing, art therapy, and guided discussions should be used to encourage self-expression and emotional healing.
