Proximate and Mineral Assessment of Senegalia Macrostachya Seed for Biofuel Production
Abstract
The nutritional composition of underutilized plant seeds has received increasing attention due to their potential applications in food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. This study evaluated the proximate and mineral composition of Senegalia macrostachya seeds using standard analytical methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists . The proximate analysis revealed that the seeds contained 6.50 ± 0.02% moisture, 6.00 ± 0.01% ash, 6.00 ± 0.02% lipid, 5.00 ± 0.01% crude fibre, 3.36 ± 0.01% nitrogen, 21.00 ± 0.20% crude protein, and 55.50 ± 0.30% carbohydrate. Mineral analysis showed potassium as the predominant mineral (300.00 ± 0.50 mg/100 g), followed by sodium (70.00 ± 0.32 mg/100 g), magnesium (24.00 ± 0.21 mg/100 g), calcium (5.00 ± 0.02 mg/100 g), and phosphorus (0.70 ± 0.00 mg/100 g). The high carbohydrate and appreciable protein contents indicate that S. macrostachya seeds could serve as a valuable source of dietary energy and plant protein, while the abundance of potassium suggests potential benefits in electrolyte balance and cardiovascular health. The low moisture content further indicates good storage stability and reduced susceptibility to microbial deterioration. These findings demonstrate that Senegalia macrostachya seeds possess considerable nutritional potential and could contribute to food security and biofuel, particularly in regions where the species is naturally abundant. Further studies on biodiesel, anti-nutritional factors, and bioavailability of nutrients are recommended to establish their suitability for human consumption and industrial utilization.
