Assessment of Thermal Comfort as a Climate-Responsive Design Strategy in Skill and Vocational Training Centers in Rivers State

Wobo Osaruchi Confidence, Chizy Akani

Abstract

Thermal comfort is a fundamental component of educational building performance, particularly in the hot-humid climate of Rivers State, Nigeria. This study assesses thermal comfort as a climate-responsive design strategy in Skill and Vocational Training Centers by examining how passive architectural measures influence indoor environmental quality. A mixed-method approach involving literature review, case study analysis, climatic assessment, and site evaluation was adopted. Findings indicate that many existing training centers experience poor ventilation, excessive heat gain, and overreliance on mechanical cooling due to inadequate building orientation, shading, and natural ventilation. The study demonstrates that climate-responsive strategies such as proper orientation, cross-ventilation, solar shading, and appropriate material selection can significantly improve thermal comfort while reducing energy demand. It concludes that incorporating these passive design principles can enhance occupants' comfort, learning performance, and the environmental sustainability of vocational training facilities in Rivers State. Key-Words: - Thermal Comfort, Climate-Responsive Design, Passive Cooling, Vocational Training Centers, Educational Buildings.
