Transformational Leadership for National Renewal: A Governance Agenda for Nigeria

Oladele Olubukola Olabode, PhD

Abstract

Nigeria's persistent governance challenges, including insecurity, corruption, weak institutions, economic hardship, youth unemployment, policy inconsistency, and declining public trust, continue to undermine national development and the state's capacity to deliver sustainable socio- economic progress. These challenges have heightened the need for a leadership paradigm that extends beyond administrative reforms to embrace ethical governance, institutional renewal, and citizen empowerment. This paper examines transformational leadership as a strategic framework for national renewal in Nigeria. Adopting a conceptual and analytical approach, the study reviews relevant literature on transformational leadership, governance, state fragility, and nation-building to explore how visionary, ethical, and service-oriented leadership can address the country's governance deficits. The paper argues that transformational leadership, characterized by vision, integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, innovation, and institutional strengthening, is essential for restoring public confidence, enhancing democratic governance, promoting economic development, and fostering national unity. It further identifies the major factors contributing to governance deficits and state fragility. It proposes a transformational governance agenda centered on ethical leadership, institutional reforms, citizen participation, transparency, and sustainable development. The study concludes that Nigeria's long-term national renewal depends not only on sound public policies but also on the emergence of transformational leaders with moral courage, competence, and a commitment to pursuing the common good. It recommends that government, educational institutions, civil society, and faith-based organizations collaborate in developing ethical and transformational leaders capable of driving sustainable national transformation.
