Sunday Sule Emah, PhD, Victor Ojorka Akor, PhD, Esther Omowumi Adelana

Abstract

This study investigated school environment and resilience development on students' motivation for learning grammar in secondary schools in Ankpa Kogi State. Two research questions guided the study which adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 4,200 Senior Secondary School II students in public secondary schools in Kogi State, from which a sample of 420 students was selected using simple random sampling technique to draw the sample for the study. Data were collected using a 13-items structured questionnaire designed on a four-point Likert Scale and analysis done using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The instrument was face validated by three experts. The reliability was tested using Cronbach Alpha and it gave a reliability coefficient of 0.72. The findings revealed that a positive school environment, characterized by a conducive learning atmosphere, supportive teachers, availability of instructional materials, and effective school discipline, strengthens students' resilience and motivation for learning grammar. The study concluded that both school environment and resilience development are critical determinants of students' motivation for learning grammar in secondary schools. It was then recommended that school administrators should improve learning facilities and classroom conditions, teachers should adopt supportive and learner-centered instructional practices, and schools should implement resilience building programmes to enhance students' motivation and improve grammar learning outcomes in secondary schools in Kogi State.
