Optimizing Wayfinding and Passenger Circulation in Road Transport Terminals for Efficient Urban Mobility
Abstract
Urban road transport terminals serve as critical nodes within city transportation networks, facilitating the movement of large volumes of passengers daily. However, many road transport terminals, particularly in rapidly urbanizing cities, often experience operational inefficiencies resulting from poor wayfinding systems and inadequate passenger circulation design. These challenges frequently lead to congestion, confusion, delays, and reduced user satisfaction, ultimately undermining the efficiency of urban mobility systems. This study examines how optimizing wayfinding and passenger circulation strategies in road transport terminal design can enhance navigation efficiency and improve overall urban mobility performance. The research adopts a qualitative analytical approach through a comprehensive review of existing literature on wayfinding principles, passenger movement patterns, and transport terminal design strategies. Key architectural factors influencing circulation efficiency such as spatial organization, signage systems, visual connectivity, accessibility, and functional zoning are critically examined. The study also explores how user-centred design approaches can improve navigational clarity and reduce movement conflicts within terminal environments. Findings from the literature indicate that clearly structured circulation routes, intuitive spatial layouts, strategic placement of signage, and the integration of universal design principles significantly improve passenger movement efficiency and user experience. The study concludes that optimizing wayfinding and passenger circulation should be treated as fundamental design considerations in road transport terminals rather than secondary planning elements. By integrating these strategies into early design stages, architects and planners can enhance passenger flow, reduce congestion, and contribute to more efficient urban mobility systems. The study further recommends the adoption of user-centred design approaches, improved signage systems, and flexible circulation planning as essential strategies for achieving efficient and sustainable transport terminal design.
