Laboratory Management for Effective Teaching of Physics in Kogi State Senior Secondary Schools

Salami Enesi Abdulrahaman

Abstract

Physics is an experimental science whose effective teaching depends largely on the availability and proper management of laboratory facilities. However, poor laboratory management has continued to hinder effective teaching and learning of Physics in many Nigerian secondary schools. This study investigated laboratory management for effective teaching of Physics in senior secondary schools in Kogi State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the availability of qualified laboratory attendants, adequacy of laboratory facilities, availability of qualified Physics teachers, condition of laboratory equipment, and adherence to laboratory safety regulations. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised Physics teachers and Senior Secondary School II (SS II) students in public secondary schools across Kogi State. Fifteen secondary schools were randomly selected, with 24 respondents selected from each school, giving a total sample of 360 respondents. A structured questionnaire titled Laboratory Management for Effective Teaching of Physics Questionnaire was used for data collection. Three hundred and ten (310) completed questionnaires were returned and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that most schools lacked qualified laboratory attendants (Mean = 2.25), adequately equipped Physics laboratories (Mean = 2.18), and sufficient qualified Physics teachers (Mean = 2.21). However, laboratory equipment available in schools was generally functional (Mean = 2.96), while laboratory safety rules were moderately observed (Mean = 2.60). The study concluded that inadequate laboratory management remains a major challenge affecting effective Physics teaching in Kogi State. It recommended increased government funding, employment of qualified laboratory personnel, regular provision and maintenance of laboratory facilities, and continuous professional development for Physics teachers.
