Assessment of Students-Centered Instructional Strategies for Teaching Basic Electricity in Technical Colleges in Delta State

Abstract

This study examined the utilization of student-centered instructional strategies in teaching Basic Electricity in Technical Colleges in Delta State. The study was guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprised of 60 basic electricity instructors and 1200 students in technical colleges in Delta State. The sample size for the study consisted of 300 respondents selected using the Taro Yamane sample size determination formula. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Students-Centered Instructional Strategies Assessment Questionnaire ”. The research instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha with an overall reliability coefficient of 0.86. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions, while t-test and ANOVA were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that student-centered instructional strategies are utilized to a high extent, with practical demonstrations, hands-on activities, cooperative learning, problem-solving, and real- life applications commonly used. The study also found that several challenges, including inadequate instructional materials, poor workshop facilities, limited instructional time, and insufficient instructor training, hinder effective implementation. Furthermore, no significant differences were found in the perceptions of instructors and students regarding utilization and challenges, and teaching experience did not significantly influence instructors’ assessment of effectiveness. The study concluded that while student-centered instructional strategies are widely used and effective in Basic Electricity instruction, their implementation is constrained by resource and infrastructural limitations. It was recommended that adequate instructional materials, improved workshop facilities, regular teacher training, and better funding be provided to enhance effective implementation.
