Community Education Strategies for Awareness Creation and Prevention of breast Cancer among rural Women in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State

Abstract

This study examined community education strategies for awareness creation and prevention of breast cancer among rural women in Akuku-Toru and Asari-Toru Local Government Areas of Rivers State. six objectives and six research questions guided the study. The study adopted an analytic descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 309 women of various community based women Organization in Akuku-Toru and Asari-Toru LGA and health officers in the various community health centers in Akuku-Toru Asari-Toru LGA. The sample of the study was 309 respondents comprising 267 women drawn from community based women organization and 42 health officers in the various community health centers. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Community Education Strategy in Awareness Creation and Prevention of Breast Cancer among Rural Women”. The instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was established using the Cronbach Alpha method. Reliability coefficients of 0.80, 0.86, 0.74, 0.84, 0.88 and 0.82 were obtained from the analysis. The research questions were answered using percentage, mean and standard deviation statistics. The findings of the study showed among others that community Education Strategies such as door- to-door advocacy campaign programme, community health workshop education Programme, school-based parent education programmes and community health extension programme could be adopted in awareness creation and prevention of breast cancer among rural women in Akuku- Toru Asari-Toru Local Government Areas of Rivers to a high extent. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that the State Ministry of Health should carry out periodic door-to-door advocacy campaign programme on breast cancer to reach women at the grassroot with this all important information as they are one of the most vulnerable populations.
