The Effects of Socio-Economic Background on the Prevalence of Mumps Virus Disease in Bali Metropolis
Abstract
The name “Mumps” may derive from an old English verb that means to grimace, grin, or mumble”, and was the name given to an epidemic illness, first described by Hippocrates in the 5th century B.C. The epidemic of mumps virus disease and its complications is what makes it important in public health. The aim of this research work was to determione the effects of socio-economic background on the prevalence of mumps virus disease in Bali metropolis. Questionnaire was administered to extract demographic data from the participant, which include, age, gender, socioeconomic background, vaccination history. A total number of 138 samples were collected, tested and analysed for statistical relationship. The participants were divided into three groups based on their socioeconomic background. They were also grouped into vaccinated and non- vaccinated group based on their vaccination history. ELISA test kit was used in determining the sero-prevalence of the mumps virus IgG and IgM antibodies among the subjects investigated. A total number of 37 participants were positive for mumps virus IgG and IgM antibodies. Low income earners recorded highest percentage of participants with mumps virus antibodies while the high-income earners group recorded the least group with the lowest percentage of participants positive for mumps virus antibodies. Male participants recorded highest prevalence of mumps virus antibodies as compared to the female. There was statistically significant relationship between the sero-prevalence of the mumps virus IgG and IgM antibodies and the socioeconomic status of the participants (p > 0.05). Mumps virus sero-positivity increase with decrease in socio- economic status. Vaccine-induced antibodies contributed in the Sero-positivity of the mumps virus antibodies in the samples of the participants investigated. It can be recommended that Public health education and awareness should be increased on mumps virus transmission, symptoms and preventions and also promote regular surveillance and screening of mumps infection to enable early detection and prompt management.
