Assessment of the Effects of Animal Manure (Cow Dung, Goat Manure and Poultry Manure) and N P K Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas L)
Abstract
Potato (Solanumtuberosum L.) is the fourth most important food crop in the world after maize, wheat and rice both in total production and in area under cultivation. Potato is generally considered to have originated from the region between latitude "10 ̊ N and 20 ̊S at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level but to be precise in Bolivia. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of animal manure (cow dung, goat and poultry manure) and n p k fertilizer on the growth and yield of sweet potato. This aim was achieved the following methodology: Land Preparation, Seed Selection, Experimental Design and Treatment, Planting, Fertilizer application, weed management, Harvesting of tubers, Plant Data Collection in Relation to Control. The results of the analysis on (Table1) shows that the NPK (360 kg/ha) had the highest efficiency. It was followed by poultry dropping (10 t/ha), cow dung and goat dropping (10 t/ha) treatment respectively. Control (O kg/ha) treatment recorded a zero efficiency. There is significant difference in plots treated with poultry dropping at 0.05% level of significant of 9.38 effect on number of branches, while plots treated with goat dropping and NPK fertilizer showing similarity to poultry dropping treatment with 7.75 and 7.75 effect on number of branches respectively, and the least (control), showing similarity to goat dropping and NPK fertilizer with 6.30 effect. In conclusion, the application of 10 t/ha of poultry dropping, cow dung had a significant effect on tuber weight and NPK fertilizer which was applied at a rate of 360 kg/ha had a significant effect on leaves length and leaves breadth per plant. The results obtained revealed that Potato produced well to the application of poultry dropping compared to other Animal manure and NPK 20:10:10 and control treatment in the study area. It can be recommended that practice of mixed farming that will involve rearing of animals particularly poultry to make available of poultry dropping to improve Potato production in the study area.
