Assessment of Selected Physical and Chemical Properties of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas L) Cultivation in Bali, Taraba State, Nigeria

Abstract

The potato can be grown almost on any type of soil except saline and alkaline soils. Soils, which are naturally loose, offer least resistance to the enlargement of the tubers is preferred. Potato crop was brought into Nigeria by the European tin miners in the 19th and 20th centuries. This study is designed to understand the problem mitigating against its production and how they can be resolved and also provide general information about sweet potato production in the study area. The methods employed in this study include; Physical Analysis of Soil, Chemical Analysis of Soil. Result of the analytical data of pre-cropping surface soil at the study area showed that zero volume of Magnesium (Mg) (meq/100kg) and presence of all other minerals. Furthermore, result also showed that the organic carbon increase from 0.8 to 2.70 and organic matter increase from 1.40 to 4.70. The study showed that the soil possesses physical and chemical characteristics that determines its suitability for sweet potato cultivation. Parameters such as soil texture, bulk density, porosity, moisture content, pH, organic matter and the level of essential nutrients (Nitrogen, phosphorus, Potassium) can significantly influence sweet potato growth and yield. It can be recommended that soil should be tested before planting. Organic manure or compost manure should be applied regularly to improve soil structure, increase organic matter and enhance nutrient availability.
