Influence of Socio-Cultural and Economic Factors on Female Education in Sokoto South Senatorial Zone, Sokoto State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined the influence of socio-cultural and economic factors on female education in Sokoto South Senatorial Zone of Sokoto State, Nigeria. Despite the recognized importance of female education for national development, gender disparities in educational participation persist in the study area. Two objectives were stated, two research question and two null hypotheses were tasted. The objective of the study were to examine the influence of society norms and values, on female educations in Sokoto south senatorial zone and to identify the influence of cultural believes, on female educations in Sokoto south senatorial zone. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of 3,147 were used which comprised female students and teachers in selected secondary schools, from which a sample of 379 students and 69 teachers was drawn using purposive and proportionate random sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled Female Education Questionnaire. The findings revealed that societal norms and values, particularly community expectations and domestic role assignments, negatively influence female education. Cultural beliefs were also found to significantly discourage girls’ participation in schooling by promoting early marriage and prioritizing marital roles over education. The study concluded that female educational participation in the study area is constrained by the interaction of socio-cultural and economic factors. It therefore recommends increased public awareness, financial support for girls’ education, enforcement of policies against early marriage, and promotion of gender equality in education to improve female participation and retention.
