Evaluation of Heating Value and Fuel Index of Indigenous Fuelwood Species for Sustainable Fish Processing

Bratua I., Burubai W., Yabefa B.E., and David I.

Abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable and efficient biomass fuels has necessitated the evaluation of the fuel’s properties of indigenous fuelwoods species. This study assessed the combustion characteristics of four selected fuelwood species, namely Akor, Osuwo, Ele and Angala, through proximate analysis, higher heating values and fuel index (FI). Standard laboratory methods were employed to determine moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon and higher heating value, while the fuel index was calculated from the measured fuel properties to evaluate the overall energy performance of the wood species. The result showed significant variations (p ˂ 0.05) among the fuelwood species. Moisture content ranged from 5.35% to 38.90%, ash content from 5.63% to 15.42%, volatile matter from 34.21% to 56.73%, fixed carbon from
