The Role of Learning Management Systems in Supporting Open, Distance, Flexible, And E-Learning (ODFEL) in Tertiary Institutions: Evidence from Federal Polytechnic Bauchi
Abstract
The rapid advancement of Information and Communication Technology has significantly transformed the delivery of education, leading to the emergence of Open, Distance, Flexible, and E-Learning systems in tertiary institutions. ODFEL provides opportunities for flexible, accessible, and learner-centered education, enabling students to study irrespective of time and location. Despite these benefits, the adoption and effective utilization of ODFEL in Nigerian polytechnics remain uneven due to infrastructural, technological, and institutional challenges. This study investigates the adoption and utilization of ODFEL in Nigerian polytechnics, with particular reference to Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. The study aims to assess the level of adoption of ODFEL, examine the extent of its utilization by students and lecturers, identify factors influencing its adoption, and determine the challenges affecting its effective implementation. A descriptive survey research design will be employed, and data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews administered to students and academic staff. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential techniques. The study is expected to reveal that while awareness of ODFEL is relatively high among students and lecturers, its utilization is limited due to factors such as poor internet connectivity, inadequate ICT infrastructure, low digital literacy, and insufficient institutional support. The findings will provide recommendations for improving the adoption and utilization of ODFEL in Nigerian polytechnics, thereby enhancing teaching and learning outcomes and promoting access to quality education.
