Value and Requirement of Adaptable Building Spaces in Some Urban Centers in Nigeria

Obasi S.C.E., Nwokenta, C.E. and, Mekwa, E.N.

Abstract

Building adaptation has a finite time horizon; appropriate spaces must evolve over time to accommodate building usage processes. In a perfect world, owner’s customer and users would be able to change the building as needed, based on a need for simple adaptation. This increases the need for a building’s adaptation, or flexibility. The significance of designing by analyzing data from a well-structured questionnaire using mean value and simple percentage, because they were intended to be single-use buildings or spaces, the majority of structures in Nigeria are left unoccupied or abandoned for extended periods of time. This makes it challenging to transform them into multipurpose areas that could effectively and efficiently serve various purposes. The ides of flexibility and adaptability for multifunctional and multi-use buildings and spaces was thus born in order to ensure optimal use of spaces and buildings, and its implementation in construction should begin at the conception and design stages.
