Evaluation of Waste Management Techniques in Kogi Central District of Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study evaluated the waste management techniques in Kogi Central District of Kogi State, Nigeria. It adopted a mixed method research design integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches concurrently to collect and analyze data for the study. 400 respondents drawn from three out of the five local government areas that make up the district were drawn through a multi-stage sampling technique. A questionnaire on evaluation of waste management techniques was used to collect relevant data for this study. Five research questions were posed and two null hypotheses were tested in the study. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested using t-test and one-way ANOVA at 95% level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that the predominant waste management techniques in Kogi Central District are open dumping and incineration, both of which potentially impact negatively on the environment and public health. The findings further revealed that there is low awareness of waste management techniques among both rural and urban dwellers in the district even though there is sufficient awareness of the impacts inefficient waste management on the environment and public health, among others. The implications of the findings for the environment, policy-making and public health were discussed. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended, among others, that state and local governments should organize periodic seminars and workshops on waste management in the area; government and private sectors should work collaboratively to provide more waste management facilities and services in Kogi Central District of Kogi State.
