Technopreneural Exploits and Preparedness of Building and Construction Trade Students in Akwa Ibom State Technical Colleges
Abstract
This study investigated the preparedness of students in building and construction trades in Technical Colleges in Akwa Ibom State for technopreneurial exploits. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and involved a sample of 90 students purposively selected from Technical Colleges offering building-related trades. Data were collected using a structured instrument titled Building and Construction Skills Preparedness Questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression) at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students demonstrated a high level of competence in basic practical construction skills and tool handling, but only a moderate level of competence in building drawing interpretation and advanced construction techniques. The study also found that students possessed low level of technopreneurial preparedness, with notable gaps in entrepreneurial mindset and innovation skills. Furthermore, a significant positive relationship was established between students’ technical competence and their readiness for technopreneurial exploits, while institutional and instructional factors were found to significantly influence their preparedness. The study concludes that although Technical Colleges are effective in imparting foundational skills, there is a need to strengthen entrepreneurship education, practical training facilities, and industry collaboration to enhance students’ readiness for technopreneurial engagement. It is recommended that stakeholders adopt a more integrated approach to technical and entrepreneurial training to promote self-reliance and sustainable economic development.
