Abstract

This study sought to investigate 2-mode advanced organizers and students’ academic achievement in the concept of digestion in senior secondary school Biology in Akwa Ibom State. The study adopted a pre-test -post-test quasi-experimental research design. The population of the study consisted of two thousand, seven hundred and thirteen (2,713) Senior Secondary (SS) Two students studying Biology in the fifteen (15) public secondary school in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The total number of students in the senior secondary school two classes formed the sample size of 78; 31 males and 47 females respectively. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the two public co-educational schools from 15 schools. The instrument used for the study was a Biology Achievement Test . The reliability was found to be 0.81 using Kuder Richardson formula-20. Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Co-Variance was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study showed that the students taught in charts-mode of advance organizer group achieved higher than those in textual-mode of advance organizer group which was significant. Based on gender, female students in the 2 groups achieved academically better than their male counterparts. Interaction of advanced organizer and gender was significant. It was recommended among others that Biology teachers should be encouraged to adopt charts-mode of advance organizers in the teaching of concepts in Biology to improve students’ achievement in Biology.
