Analysis of the Management of Examination Malpractices in Nigeria Police Academy, Kano

Musa Ibrahim Umar, Mailamba, John Ishaya

Abstract

This study analyzed the management of examination malpractices in the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State. The specific objectives were to identify the common forms of examination malpractice, assess the management strategies adopted by the Academy, and determine the relationship between these management strategies and the incidence of malpractice. A survey research design was adopted. Data were collected from 217 respondents comprising cadets and academic staff using a structured questionnaire validated by experts and tested for reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.82. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to analyze the demographic characteristics, forms, and management practices. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to test the relationship between effect of examination malpractices and the level of cadet’s future performance at a 0.05 significance level. Results showed that the prevalent forms of malpractice were impersonation, smuggling of unauthorized materials, collusion, and use of mobile devices. Descriptive analysis revealed that strategies such as strict invigilation, biometric verification, CCTV surveillance, and prompt disciplinary actions were moderately implemented, with mean scores ranging from 3.21 to 3.89. Correlation analysis indicated a significant negative relationship between effect of examination malpractices and the cadet’s future performance (r = -0.78, p < 0.05). This implies that effect of examination malpractices significantly reduces cadet’s future performances. The study concluded that while the Nigeria Police Academy has instituted measures to manage examination malpractice, enforcement inconsistencies and staff complicity weaken their effectiveness. It recommends consistent application of sanctions, increased use of technology in examination conduct, and integration of academic integrity training into cadet orientation programs to strengthen the management system.
