They Began to Write Like They Had Seen the World": Teachers' and Students' Lived Experiences of Integrating Extensive Reading into Narrative Essay Writing Pedagogy in Gwagwalada Secondary Schools

Grace Ugochi Ndubuisi, David N. Rinji

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the lived experiences, perceptions, and meaning-making processes of teachers and students participating in an extensive reading (ER)-integrated narrative essay writing programme in public senior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. Embedded within the broader framework of a quasi-experimental study, this qualitative component sought to illuminate the experiential dimensions of ER integration that quantitative data alone cannot capture: how students perceived the value of ER in relation to their writing identity; how teachers navigated the practical and institutional challenges of implementing ER; and what pedagogical insights teachers derived from observing their students' writing transformation. Drawing on classroom observation field notes, teacher reflective journals, and student narrative accounts, data were analysed thematically following Braun and Clarke's (2006) framework. Five major themes sprung up: (1) the reading-writing awakening students' growing awareness of the connection between reading and writing; (2) identity reconstruction the shift from reluctant writers to confident storytellers; (3) navigating institutional barriers teachers' experiences of time constraints, material scarcity, and administrative indifference; (4) gender and engagement differential patterns of male and female engagement with ER texts; and (5) the teacher as reader and model the centrality of teacher identity to programme success. Findings call for institutional policy reforms, teacher development programmes, and context-sensitive approaches to ER implementation in resource-constrained public-school settings.
