Biometrics Fingerprint System, an Efficient Tool for Checking Students and Staff Attendance

Ezennorom Edmund Onwubiko, Nnamani MaryClaret Tochukwu, Ellam Ikenna Victor

Abstract

In the recent past, the identification of individuals could be very unreliable due to the fact that anyone could always pretend to be someone else, and can gain unauthorized access to places by altering data. The use of Biometrics, which deals with recognizing humans based on the combination of electronic devices and one or more intrinsic unique physical or behavioural traits greatly reduced this problem. Biometrics based attendance monitoring system has acted as a check to these anomalies of manual attendance system whereby individual identification is unreliable and any person can sign for any staff or student who is not physically present at that time needed either in the class for students or at the duty post for the staff. This paper affirms the genuineness and security of the biometric-based Attendance System and justifying its importance in our offices and classrooms for checking attendance. To implement the system, Student Attendance Monitoring System was developed using Java technology and MysqL as the backend using Madonna University Students as case study. The system involves scanning of student fingerprints using fingerprint scanner and acquiring biometric data from the student, extracting a feature set from the acquired data and comparing this feature set against the template set in the database. Imposters fingerprints were rejected and access denied while genuine staff or students’ fingerprints were accepted and access allowed. The result was successfully achieved.
