Yahaya, Abubakar, Oko, Agha Christopher

Abstract

One of the most cherished values, and indeed, an important requirement for decency in business is a sense of ethics. The nature and place of ethics in business find relevance amidst the moral decline in day-to-day business transactions among individuals. It is no longer a mirage that individuals in different business pursuits have inculcated the habit of indulging in immoral acts such as inflating the price of commodities over and beyond the cost price, tax evasion, packaging and selling of substandard products, demanding kickbacks in contract, repacking of products in the course of transporting it to its destination etc. This paper seeks to examine and address some of these unethical behaviours by emphasizing and re-echoing the place of ethics in business. It will acknowledge the concept of ethics, and business and also examine the place of ethics in business using the analytical and expository method. The findings will be central to our quest to highlight the dangers and otherwise of ethics in business, and the recommendations will help the business community and the society at large on the need to inculcate ethical conduct in the pursuit of their business. It will also help further research in this field.
