Smart Card Technology: A Comprehensive Solution to Data Security and Privacy

Mohammed Osiafi Iluedo, Najeem Olawale Adelakun

Abstract

As digital services, electronic payments, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things technologies continue to grow at a fast pace, there have been growing concerns about data security, privacy, and identity protection. Traditional authentication methods, including password-based systems and magnetic stripe cards, are becoming more susceptible to sophisticated cyberattacks, identity theft and financial fraud. As a result, smart card technology has become a reliable hardware-based authentication, cryptographic data protection and digital identity management solution. The current study is a systematic review of the smart card technology, which covers the history of smart card technology, classification of smart cards, hardware architecture, smart card operating systems, Radio Frequency Identification communication framework, international standards, security mechanisms, and major application areas. The methodology used was a systematic literature review, using the PRISMA framework, which involved synthesizing evidence from peer-reviewed publications, international standards and technical reports. The importance of ISO/IEC 7816, ISO/IEC 14443, ISO/IEC 15693, EMV, GlobalPlatform, and Java Card standards for interoperability, secure communication, and multi-application capabilities is emphasized. In addition, it examines current challenges in implementation, such as interoperability, deployment costs, privacy issues, and new cybersecurity risks, and outlines future research opportunities related to artificial intelligence, blockchain, post-quantum cryptography, biometrics, and the Internet of Things. The review concludes that smart cards continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring secure digital infrastructures, offering robust, scalable, and interoperable solutions to protect data security and privacy within the modern digital ecosystem.
