Enhancing Energy Efficiency in Port Harcourt ICT Facility

Abstract

This paper examines energy efficiency of ICT facilities using Architectural design methods of space optimization. The focus primarily is on Nigerian ICT facilities with reference to user experiences, Economic sustainability and adaptability to challenging needs. This study seeks to explore various challenges faced by indigenous purpose built and retro-fitted space used as ICT center’s across various locations in Nigeria. The idea is to explore tangible design method of improving the Nigerian ICT facilities in order to meet both the energy, academic, social and economic need of these facilities and its users. This will ensure that energy efficiency is balanced with long tern sustainability of the facility. Qualitative case study approach was adopted to provide comparative study of various ICT facilities and formed the basis for proffering solutions based on the existing problems. Study indicated that Nigerians ICT challenges comes from short falls in design planning and implementations, unmet demand for design specifics and environmental needs, adaptability and sustainability gaps, short falls in design and building standards. All these collectively contributes to the failures of the Nigerians ICT infrastructures. Therefore, using the right architectural design methods can improve not only energy efficiency but also promote sustainability and user’s wellbeing. Design methods adopted to build a user-friendly facility, will include, use of passive designs, space optimization, layout optimization, current technology and utilization of natural elements which promote sunlight, ventilation and quality air flow. This automatically minimizes the use of mechanical heating, cooling and lighting systems in the facility and promote energy efficiency.
