Research-Oriented Practical Work as a Means of Developing Students’ Biology Competencies in Secondary Education
Abstract
The development of students’ biology competencies requires teaching methods that connect knowledge with practical activity, inquiry, evidence analysis and reflection. This article examines the effectiveness of research-oriented practical work in developing students’ biology competencies in secondary education. The study was conducted as a pedagogical experiment involving 740 students from six secondary schools. Experimental groups were taught through practical and laboratory activities, project tasks, interactive methods and inquiry-oriented assignments, while control groups studied through traditional teaching approaches. The study used diagnostic tests, questionnaires, classroom observation, practical assignments, expert assessment, comparative analysis and mathematical-statistical processing. The proposed model integrates search-oriented, analytical, communicative, reflective, functional and career-oriented components. The results showed that students in experimental groups demonstrated better ability to apply biological knowledge, analyze evidence, interpret results and draw conclusions. The final comparative analysis showed that the performance indicators of the experimental groups were 12.55% higher than those of the control groups.
