What Drives Sustained Audience Growth on YouTube Linking Content Strategy, Publishing Cadence, and Watch-Time Retention

Abstract

Audience growth on YouTube is frequently attributed to a single decisive variable, whether a viral upload, a striking thumbnail, or a relentless posting schedule. This paper argues instead that durable growth is a systemic outcome that emerges when three creator-controlled drivers operate together: content strategy, publishing cadence, and watch-time retention. Using an integrative review of scholarly literature in media studies, communication theory, marketing, and recommender systems, supplemented by industry evidence, the paper synthesises prior work into a single conceptual model. In that model the three drivers’ compound through two connective mechanisms, namely the platform recommender that converts content into reach and the parasocial bond that converts attention into return visits and subscription. Content strategy is positioned as the upstream driver that sets both discoverability and the ceiling on retention. Publishing cadence supplies the volume of distribution attempts, the data the recommender needs to learn, and the iteration velocity through which creators improve. Watch-time retention functions as the quality signal that determines whether each distribution attempt expands or contracts future reach. The synthesis yields a central finding: cadence and retention are complements rather than substitutes, so high publishing frequency accelerates growth only when retention is adequate and may otherwise waste impressions. The paper specifies the resulting relationships, discusses their practical implications for creators and managers, acknowledges the endogeneity and platform- opacity problems that constrain inference, and outlines directions for empirical testing. The contribution is a parsimonious, mechanism-based account that reconciles practitioner heuristics with academic theory and clarifies why volume without retention, and quality without distribution, each tend to stall.
