Poultry Manure and Npk Fertilizer Assessment on the Growth and Yield Components of Maize

Abstract

This study compared the performance of poultry manure and NPK 15:15:15 on growth and yield of maize and soil fertility. Composite soil samples were collected from the experimental plot at the depth of 0 – 15 and 15 – 30 cm using soil auger. The soil samples were bulked and carefully packed in labelled polythene bags for laboratory analysis. Another sample was taken after two weeks of application of the poultry manure and the fertilizer to examine effect of the manure and fertilizer on the soil properties. Growth and yield data of maize were also obtained at 2, 4, 6, 8,10 and 12 Weeks After Planting. Laboratory data obtained and the growth and yield data were statistically analysed for means, standard deviation and analysis of variance . Results showed that sand particles dominated the particle size distribution of the entire soils with low activity of clay giving rise to loamy sand texture in control, poultry manure soil and NPK soils respectively. PMS had higher pH (5.75) than the control (5.48) and NPK (5.27) soils and the difference was significant (p<0.05). PMS also had the highest organic matter (4.40), total nitrogen (0.10) and the exchangeable bases than the control (3.57 %) and NPK (4.39 %) soils too. PMS (0.12 cmol/kg) still performed better than the control (0.08 cmol/kg) and NPK (0.10 cmol/kg) in terms of soil K level suggesting that application of PM is beneficial in building soil exchangeable bases. Generally, the fertility status of PMS was higher than that of the NPK and control soil suggesting that PM could be a useful source of nutrient supplement to the soil for improved crop production. Furthermore, PM performed better than NPK and control in the entire growth parameters considered namely plant height, stem girth, number of leaf, leaf length, leaf width and leaf area. PM also gave the highest pod length, pod diameter, husked weight, dehusked weight, weight of husk and diameter of corn followed by NPK while control had the least. The study has revealed that poultry manure used in the study contained good amounts of plant nutrients which could make them very effective in soil fertility management. The use of poultry manure as a possible source of organic manure for soil amendment for crop production is highly recommended in soils of the study area.
