Influence of Studio Design and Indoor Environmental Quality on Burnout Among Architecture Students: Evidence from Caleb University, Nigeria

Abstract

Architecture education is widely recognized for its demanding studio culture, long working hours, and intense academic pressure, which often contribute to burnout among architecture students. While burnout is frequently associated with workload and academic expectations, the role of the physical studio environment in influencing students’ wellbeing remains underexplored. This study investigates the influence of studio design and indoor environmental quality on burnout among architecture students, with particular focus on spatial layout, functionality, flexibility, lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustics, and overall environmental comfort within architectural studios. This study adopts a quantitative cross- sectional survey design to investigate the influence of studio design and indoor environmental quality on burnout among architecture students at Caleb University. Data were collected from architecture students in Caleb University to evaluate students’ perceptions of their studio environments and their experiences of stress, emotional exhaustion, fatigue, and reduced academic engagement. The study seeks to establish the relationship between studio conditions and burnout levels among students, while highlighting the importance of well-designed and environmentally responsive studio spaces in supporting mental well-being, comfort, and academic productivity within architectural education.
