Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in managing drug abuse among clients in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Rehabilitation Centre, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. The study was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses and adopted a quasi-experimental, non-randomized pretest–posttest research design. The population comprised drug users undergoing rehabilitation at the NDLEA Centre, Abuja. A sample of 60 participants was selected and assigned to REBT and CBT groups. Data were collected using the Drug Users Behavioral Assessment Scale , which measured social withdrawal, emotional instability, and aggressive behavior. The instrument was validated by experts in Guidance and Counselling and Measurement and Evaluation, while its reliability was established using Cronbach Alpha. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy significantly reduced emotional instability and aggressive behavior among drug users. However, there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of REBT and CBT in improving behavioral outcomes among participants. The study concluded that both REBT and CBT are effective psychological interventions for managing maladaptive behaviors among drug users in rehabilitation settings. It was recommended that evidence-based cognitive- behavioral therapies should be integrated into rehabilitation programmes to enhance recovery outcomes and reduce relapse among drug users.
