Communal Conflicts and Socio-Economic Development in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, 2013- 2015

Abstract

Communal conflicts have remained a major challenge to peace, security, and socio-economic development in Nigeria, particularly in multi-ethnic communities where competition over land, resources, and livelihoods is intense. In Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, recurrent communal conflicts between 2013 and 2015 significantly disrupted economic activities, social relations, and development processes, thereby raising concerns about their implications for local socio-economic development. This study examined the impact of communal conflicts on socio- economic development in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State between 2013 and 2015. The study was anchored on Conflict Theory, which explains how competition over scarce resources, inequality, and structural tensions among groups often lead to social conflicts that undermine stability and development. A qualitative research design was adopted using a descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through twenty (20) in-depth interviews and one Focus Group Discussion , supplemented with secondary sources such as textbooks, journal articles, government publications, and conflict-related reports. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify recurring themes and patterns. The findings revealed that communal conflicts in Wukari significantly affected socio-economic development during the period under review. The conflicts disrupted agricultural production, weakened market systems, reduced income levels, increased unemployment, and constrained transportation activities. E-ISSN 2504-883X P-ISSN 2695 2432 Furthermore, education and healthcare services were negatively affected, while displacement of people and destruction of property further worsened living conditions in the area. The study also found that insecurity created long-term developmental setbacks, including reduced investment and weakened social cohesion among communities. The study concludes that communal conflicts constitute a major barrier to socio-economic development in Wukari Local Government Area. It recommends the strengthening of peacebuilding mechanisms, promotion of inter-communal dialogue, improvement of security presence, youth empowerment programmes, and equitable distribution of development projects to foster sustainable peace and development in the area.
