Space Planning and Domestic Comfort in Tropical Residential Buildings

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between space planning and domestic comfort in tropical residential buildings, with particular attention to how spatial organization influences the physical, psychological, and environmental well-being of occupants within tropical climatic conditions. In many tropical regions, residential buildings are often exposed to high temperatures, humidity, heavy rainfall, and inadequate ventilation, all of which significantly affect indoor comfort and the quality of living. The research explores how effective space planning strategies such as proper room orientation, circulation patterns, zoning of private and public spaces, window positioning, natural lighting, cross-ventilation, and spatial flexibility can enhance thermal comfort, functionality, and overall residential satisfaction. The study further investigates the impact of poor space planning practices, including overcrowding, inadequate airflow, inefficient room arrangements, and limited access to natural light, which frequently result in discomfort, increased energy consumption, and unhealthy indoor environments. Using selected residential buildings within tropical environments as case studies, the research adopts both qualitative and quantitative approaches through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and spatial analysis to evaluate occupant experiences and building performance. Findings from the study are expected to demonstrate that well-planned residential spaces not only improve domestic comfort and environmental efficiency but also contribute to sustainable living and better social interaction among occupants. The research therefore emphasizes the need for architects, planners, and developers to integrate climate-responsive design principles and user-centered space planning approaches in the design of tropical residential buildings in order to achieve healthier, more comfortable, and sustainable housing environments.
