Relationship Between Vegetation and Climate Variables in Bade Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study investigates the relationships between vegetation and climate variables in the Bade Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria. Landsat’s Landsat images of Landsat 5 Multi- Spectral Scanner for 1986, 1988, 1991; Landsat 7, Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) for 2001; and Landsat 8, Operational Land Imager for 2014, 2016, and 2018 of Bade local government area were downloaded in October and November from the U.S.GS website. They were processed in ArcGIS 10.2 to produce NDVI for the study area. Climatic data such as Rainfall, Temperature, Relative humidity, and Wind speed were collected in Bade Local Government Area from the North East Arid Zone Development Program Garin Alkali Nigeria Meteorological station and analysed in Microsoft Excel. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was employed to assess the relationship between vegetation cover and climatic variables, conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 21). The result indicates a negative relationship between cumulative climatic variables (Rainfall, Relative humidity (RH), Wind speed, Temperature, Onset, Cessation, LRS, SI, and change in vegetation)) In the Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria. Hence, it is recommended that the study of past vegetation using remote sensing, GIS, and NDVI techniques is paramount. GIS and Remote sensing Centres should be set up in Yobe State, especially in Bade Local Government Area, by the State and Federal governments to generate and monitor information on vegetation changes and their possible negative impacts, thereby improving understanding of the importance of vegetation and climate feedback to both humans and the environment.
