Digital Skills Required of Office and Information Management Lecturers for Effective Implementation of Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards in Rivers State Universities

Abstract

This study investigated digital skills required of Office and Information Management lecturers for the effective implementation of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards in Rivers State universities. Three research questions guided the study, while three null hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 55 OTM lecturers from two public universities in Rivers State. Due to the manageable size, a census sampling method was used to study the entire population. Data were collected using a self-developed structured questionnaire titled Digital Skills Required of OIM Lecturers for Implementation of CCMAS Questionnaire (DSROIML-ICCMASQ). The instrument contained 24 items across three clusters measured on a five-point rating scale. The instrument was face-validated by three experts, while reliability coefficients of 0.81, 0.76, and 0.84 (with an overall coefficient of 0.80) were obtained using Cronbach’s alpha. Out of 55 copies distributed, 53 were duly completed and analysed using mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The findings revealed that digital content creation skills (Xˉ= 4.20), virtual collaboration skills (Xˉ= = 4.34), and AI application skills (Xˉ= = 4.04) are highly required of OIM lecturers for effective implementation of CCMAS. It was also found that there were no statistically significant differences in the mean ratings of OIM lecturers based on years of teaching experience and teaching qualification across all the skill areas (p > 0.05). The study concluded that the effective implementation of CCMAS in Rivers State Universities is largely dependent on the possession of relevant digital skills by OIM lecturers. It was recommended that university administrators and the government should provide continuous professional development programmes, adequate digital infrastructure, and targeted AI training initiatives to enhance lecturers’ competencies for improved curriculum delivery.
