Communication Strategies for Poverty Alleviation: A Study of Select Ministries in Akwa Ibom State
Abstract
The study was conceived to investigate the communication strategies deployed by the government of Akwa Ibom state to tackle poverty through numerous poverty alleviation programmes with a view of identifying the communication strategies, the response of the people and the effect of the poverty alleviation programmes. A survey design was adopted to reach a representative sample of 365. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire and analysed using the Weighted Mean Scores on a four-point Likert Scale. The study found that the government was beginning to incorporate social media into its communication strategy for publicity sake in addition to the utilization of known traditional channels of communication within the rural populace. The study also found that the people responded favourably to the poverty alleviation programmes, determining its success. The study therefore recommended the expansion of government communication infrastructure. It was further recommended that government should design long term poverty alleviation programmes to effectively check the scourge.
