Christian Preaching Across Ages: Transformation, Challenges, and Prospects

Olatunji Hezekiah Adigun, Olaoluwa Adetunji Ewekeye

Abstract

This paper examines the progress of Christian preaching across historical periods, its challenges, and prospects, with particular attention to contemporary African contexts. It traces the transformation of preaching from its roots in the Old Testament and the ministry of Jesus Christ through the apostolic era, the Church Fathers, the medieval period, the Reformation, and also the modern and post-modern ages. The study is analytical in nature, with literature as a source of data. The paper highlights how preaching has continually adapted in response to changing environments while maintaining its commitment to proclaiming the gospel. It identifies key challenges faced in history, including persecution, doctrinal controversies, secularization, digital disinformation, and cultural fragmentation. The paper finally uncovers the prospects of Christian preaching, particularly in Africa; these include the potential to foster unity, reconciliation, empowerment, and social transformation. Key Words: Preaching history, Prospect of preaching, Transformation.
