Assessment of Indoor Environmental Quality in Naturally Ventilated University Lecture Halls in University of Lagos, Nigeria
Abstract
Indoor Environmental Quality plays an important role in influencing occupants’ comfort, health, concentration, and academic performance within educational buildings. In tropical regions such as Lagos, naturally ventilated lecture halls are widely adopted in universities due to their low energy demand and sustainability benefits. However, challenges such as poor ventilation, thermal discomfort, noise intrusion, and inadequate lighting conditions may negatively affect students’ learning experiences. This study aims to assess the Indoor Environmental Quality of naturally ventilated lecture halls in the University of Lagos by examining occupants’ perceptions of thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic conditions, and visual comfort. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using structured questionnaires administered to students and academic staff within selected lecture halls. Data obtained from the study will be analyzed using descriptive statistical methods to identify major environmental challenges affecting indoor learning conditions. The findings are expected to contribute to sustainable and climate- responsive educational building design in tropical environments.
