Integrating Interactive Mathematics Applications to Improve Numeracy Skills Among Primary School Pupils in Kogi State

Abstract

The acquisition of numeracy skills is fundamental to the cognitive and academic development of primary school pupils. However, poor performance in mathematics among primary school learners remains a major concern in Nigeria, including Kogi State. Traditional methods of teaching mathematics often fail to stimulate learners' interest and active participation, thereby limiting the development of numeracy competencies. The emergence of interactive mathematics applications has created new opportunities for enhancing mathematics instruction through technology-driven and learner-centered approaches. This paper examines the integration of interactive mathematics applications as a strategy for improving numeracy skills among primary school pupils in Kogi State. The study discusses the concepts of numeracy and interactive mathematics applications, theoretical foundations, benefits, implementation strategies, challenges and empirical evidence supporting technology-assisted mathematics learning. Findings from existing literature indicate that interactive mathematics applications improve pupils’ engagement, motivation, conceptual understanding, problem-solving abilities and academic achievement in mathematics. The paper concludes that the effective integration of interactive mathematics applications can significantly enhance numeracy development among primary school pupils in Kogi State. Recommendations are provided for policymakers, educators, parents and stakeholders to facilitate successful implementation.
