Assessing the Influence of Architectural Learning Environments on Student Mental Wellbeing: A Post-Occupancy Evaluation of Caleb University, the University of Lagos
Abstract
Architectural learning environments play a significant role in shaping students' academic experiences, emotional wellbeing, creativity, and productivity given the demanding nature of studio-based architectural education. This study assesses the influence of architectural learning environments on student mental wellbeing through a Post-Occupancy Evaluation of the Departments of Architecture at Caleb University and the University of Lagos. A mixed-method research approach incorporating structured questionnaires, direct physical observations, environmental assessments, and informal interviews was adopted to generate both quantitative and qualitative data. The study examined key variables including ventilation quality, thermal comfort, lighting adequacy, sanitation conditions, studio accessibility, power supply reliability, spatial overcrowding, and studio organization. Findings revealed that both Caleb University and the University of Lagos experience significant challenges, particularly with respect to poor ventilation and overcrowding within their respective Master of Science studio spaces. Additional challenges identified at Caleb University include inappropriate toilet placement adjacent to studio environments, inconsistent power supply, and restricted night-time studio access. At the University of Lagos, students benefit from comparatively stronger collaborative studio culture and greater spatial flexibility in studio usage, although aging infrastructure, moderate noise disturbances, and large student population pressures persist. The study established that poor indoor environmental quality contributes to elevated stress levels, fatigue, reduced concentration, emotional discomfort, and diminished academic efficiency among architecture students at both institutions. The research concludes that healthier, more flexible architectural learning environments are essential for improving students' mental wellbeing and academic performance. The study recommends the integration of biophilic design principles, improved infrastructural planning, enhanced indoor environmental quality measures, and student- centered studio policies within architectural schools in Nigeria.
