Digital Literacy Skills as A Predictor of Colleges of Education Students’ Academic Achievement in Chemistry

Abstract

The study investigated digital literacy skills as a predictor of Colleges of education students’ achievement in Chemistry. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The predictive correlation design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 47 students of in Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education, Sagbama, Yenogoa, Bayelsa state, from which 29 students in 2024/2025 was drawn using random and purposive sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was Digital literacy skills Scale which was validated by three experts from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The reliability of DLSS was established using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded coefficient of internal consistency of 0.87. The students’ CGPA was used to indicate their academic achievement whereas DLSS was administered on students with the help of two research assistants. The data obtained were analyzed using simple and multiple linear regressions. The findings of the study revealed among others that 21% of the variance in Chemistry achievement was predicted by students’ digital literacy skills. Achievement scores in Chemistry was significantly predicted by students’ digital literacy skills with the dimensions of online search, online collaboration and desktop publishing skills contributing significantly to achievement in Chemistry. It was concluded that digital literacy skills are a significant predictor of academic achievement in Chemistry. It was recommended that, Colleges of education should redesign Chemistry courses to emphasize technology-enabled collaborative learning, incorporating virtual lab partnerships, peer-review systems, and cloud-based projects.
