Length–Weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Oreochromis Niloticus in the Upper Nun River, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Abstract
This study evaluated the length–weight relationship and condition factor (K) of Oreochromis niloticus collected from the Upper Nun River, Niger Delta, Nigeria. A total of 130 specimens were sampled between June and September 2014 using artisanal fishing gears. Morphometric parameters including total length (cm) and body weight (g) were measured and analyzed using the equation. The growth exponent (b) values were 2.47 , 1.902 , and 2.75 (combined), indicating negative allometric growth for both sexes and near-isometric growth for the combined population. The condition factor ranged from 1.78 to 2.07, suggesting favorable environmental conditions and good fish health. Seasonal variation was observed, with peak condition in July. The study provies baseline biological data essential for fisheries management, conservation, and sustainable utilization of O. niloticus in the Niger Delta.
