Climate Change, Information Warfare and Regional Security in the Niger Delta: The Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence and Media

Abstract

Climate change has emerged as one of the most significant non-traditional security threats confronting the global community in the twenty-first century. Beyond environmental degradation, climate change has intensified displacement, poverty, food insecurity, migration, violent conflicts, and economic instability in many vulnerable regions of the world. In the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, climate change intersects with oil pollution, weak environmental governance, unemployment, social inequality, and insecurity to create complex threats to peace and sustainable development. Copious literature search shows that very limited studies have been conducted on the relationship between climate change, regional security, information warfare and climate disasters in the Niger Delta. This paper examines the relationship between climate change, regional security, and information warfare in the Niger Delta region and determine how flooding, sea level rise, coastal erosion, resource depletion, and environmental degradation continue to undermine social stability. In this study we reviewed over thirty scholarly publications, technical reports, and conference papers and carried out content analysis. Information manipulation, disinformation, governance failures, and propaganda inflame communal tensions and weaken trust in institutions; climate disaster vulnerability has triggered mass displacement, competition over scarce resources and escalating tensions in fragile communities in the Niger Delta region. Effective climate resilience in the Niger Delta requires integrated approaches involving diplomacy, intelligence, media engagement, community participation, and collaborative truth mechanisms. It concludes that climate security and information integrity must become central pillars of sustainable peace building and regional development in Nigeria and across Africa.
