Generative AI and Spiritual Development in the Church: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has introduced transformative possibilities for learning, communication, and spiritual engagement within the Church. Generative AI tools capable of producing sermons, devotional materials, theological reflections, and personalized spiritual content present new opportunities to enhance spiritual development and expand access to biblical teachings. These technologies can support discipleship, improve theological education, and make spiritual resources more accessible to diverse and geographically isolated audiences. However, integrating AI into spiritual formation raises significant theological and ethical concerns about authenticity, dependence on technology, the diminishing role of human mentorship, and the need to preserve the Holy Spirit's guidance in Christian discipleship. Scholars caution that excessive reliance on AI-generated spiritual content may foster superficial, content- driven faith experiences rather than deep, relational, Spirit-led growth. Despite these concerns, the thoughtful and ethical application of generative AI offers promising prospects for the Church in the digital age. AI can complement ministry efforts by supporting evangelism, facilitating personalized learning, and enhancing communication while still preserving the importance of communal worship, prayer, and biblical teaching. This paper, therefore, examines the concepts of generative AI and spiritual development, as well as their interrelationship within the Church. It further discusses the challenges and opportunities of integrating generative AI into spiritual development. It offers recommendations to ensure technological innovation remains aligned with biblical truth, ethical responsibility, and Spirit-empowered transformation.
