Natural Polymers and Bio-Based Additives as Pour Point Depressants for Flow Assurance of Waxy Crude Oil Pipelines: A Review
Abstract
Waxy crude oils create persistent flow assurance challenges in petroleum pipelines because paraffinic waxes precipitate, crystallize and deposit when temperature falls below wax appearance conditions. These processes increase viscosity, promote gel formation, raise pumping and restart pressure, reduce pipeline capacity and may eventually cause blockage. Conventional synthetic pour point depressants, including ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates and related comb polymers, remain important chemical-control options because they can modify wax crystal growth and reduce crystal-network strength. However, their petroleum-derived origin, crude-specific performance, environmental concerns and cost have encouraged increasing interest in natural polymers and bio-based additives. This review evaluates the prospects of natural polymers and bio-based materials as greener pour point depressants for waxy crude oil pipelines. It synthesizes literature on wax deposition, mechanisms of pour point depression, conventional chemical additives, bio-derived flow improvers, performance indicators and practical limitations. The review concludes that natural polymers and bio-based additives are promising, but they should not yet be presented as universal substitutes for commercial synthetic depressants. Their industrial value depends on reproducible composition, crude-specific testing, rheological validation, compatibility assessment, economic analysis and field-scale confirmation.
