Digital Learning Tools and Cognitive Development Among Preschool Children

Abstract

This study investigated digital learning tools and cognitive development among preschool children. The study specifically examined the influence of digital learning tools on preschool children’s numeracy skills and identified the challenges associated with the implementation of digital learning technologies in preschool education. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 100 preschool teachers and 200 preschool children selected from public and private preschool centres in Ekiti State and Ondo State, Nigeria. A sample size of 300 respondents was selected using multistage sampling procedures involving simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Digital Learning Tools and Cognitive Development Questionnaire .” The instrument was validated by experts in Early Childhood Education and Measurement and Evaluation, while reliability was established using Cronbach Alpha reliability method with a reliability coefficient of 0.70. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that digital learning tools significantly influence preschool children’s numeracy skills (R = 0.734, R2 = 0.539, p < 0.05). The study further revealed that infrastructure challenges, teacher competence, funding constraints, and electricity supply significantly predict the implementation of digital learning tools in preschool education (R = 0.768, R2 = 0.590, p < 0.05). The study concluded that digital learning tools positively enhance preschool children’s cognitive and numeracy development when properly implemented. The study recommended adequate provision of digital facilities, improved teacher ICT training, stable electricity supply, and increased funding for technology-enhanced preschool education.
