Comparative Nutritional Analysis of Four Cola Soft Drink Brands Sold in Aba Market

Abstract

Soft drinks are among the most widely consumed beverages globally, especially among young people and urban populations. Excessive intake of cola beverages has been associated with obesity, diabetes mellitus, dental caries, and cardiovascular diseases due to their high sugar and caffeine contents. This study comparatively analyzed the nutritional composition of four cola soft drink brands commonly sold in Aba market, Abia State, Nigeria. The selected brands included Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Big Cola, and RC Cola. Parameters analyzed included sugar content, pH level, caloric value, caffeine content, sodium concentration, and carbonation level. Results revealed variations among the brands in nutritional composition, with some products exhibiting higher sugar and acidity levels than others. The study concluded that regular consumption of cola beverages should be moderated due to their high sugar and acidic properties which may negatively affect public health.
