Talent Acquisition Practices and Recruitment Challenges in Architectural Firms in Nigeria

ARC. Ehibudu, Ernest Chikwendu

Abstract

This study examined talent acquisition practices and recruitment challenges in architectural firms in Nigeria, with emphasis on how firms attract, select, and retain qualified professionals in a highly competitive industry. The study was motivated by increasing concerns over shortages of skilled architectural personnel, high employee turnover, brain drain, and difficulties in recruiting competent candidates within the Nigerian construction and design sector. The objectives of the study were to identify the major talent acquisition practices adopted by architectural firms, assess the effectiveness of recruitment strategies, examine the challenges affecting recruitment processes, and recommend measures for improving talent acquisition outcomes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, while primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to employees and management staff of selected architectural firms in Nigeria. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings revealed that architectural firms commonly utilize employee referrals, online recruitment platforms, internship programs, and professional networking as major talent acquisition practices. However, recruitment efforts are significantly constrained by skills shortages, migration of professionals, inadequate compensation structures, and intense competition for qualified talent. The study concluded that effective talent acquisition practices contribute positively to organizational performance and workforce stability in architectural firms. The study recommended improved employer branding, competitive remuneration, stronger collaboration with academic institutions, and increased adoption of digital recruitment technologies to enhance recruitment effectiveness and sustainability within the industry.
